Chatting Between the Brain and White Adipose Tissues

2012

Over the past decades, numerous papers have been published demonstrating the importance of the relationships between the brain and white adipose tissues in regard to body weight and metabolism regulation. Indeed the brain mainly via the sympathetic nervous system control body fat mass both by regulating adipocytes metabolism (lipolysis and lipogenesis), secretory activity (leptin and other adipokines) as well as development. In turn fat mass will send information to some brain areas via sensory nerves as well as via changes in metabolic and hormonal signals. Altogether these data are in support of a feedback loop between white adipose tissues and the brain. This crosstalk plays a major role…

Postnatal Overfeeding in Rodents by Litter Size Reduction Induces Major Short- and Long-Term Pathophysiological Consequences

2013

Numerous studies have demonstrated that the early postnatal environment can influence body weight and energy homeostasis into adulthood. Rodents raised in small litters have been shown to be a useful experimental model to study the short- and long-term consequences of early overnutrition, which can lead to modifications not only in body weight but also of several metabolic features. Postnatal overfeeding (PNOF) induces early malprogramming of the hypothalamic system, inducing acquired persisting central leptin and insulin resistance and an increase in orexigenic signals. Visceral white adipose tissue, lipogenic activity, and inflammatory status are increased in PNOF rodents, while brown adi…

Relationships between adipose tissues and brain: what do we learn from animal studies?

2010

International audience; Over the last decades, more and more data supporting the importance of the relationships between the brain and adipose tissues (white and brown) in regards of body weight regulation and energy homeostasis have been published. Indeed the brain via the autonomic nervous system participates to the regulation of different parameters such as the metabolic (lipolysis, lipogenesis and thermogeneis), and secretory (leptin and other adipokines) activities but also plasticity (proliferation differentiation and apoptosis) of adipose tissues. In turn the various fat pads will send information via sensory innervation of white adipose tissue as well as metabolic and hormonal signa…

Are skeletal muscleFNDC5gene expression and irisin release regulated by exercise and related to health?

2013

Recently, contradictory findings have been reported concerning the function of irisin and its precursor gene, skeletal muscle FNDC5, in energy homeostasis, and the associated regulatory role of exercise and PGC-1α. We therefore evaluated whether muscle FNDC5 mRNA and serum irisin are exercise responsive and whether PGC-1α expression is associated with FNDC5 expression. The male subjects in the study performed single exercises: (1) 1 h low-intensity aerobic exercise (AE) (middle-aged, n = 17), (2) a heavy-intensity resistance exercise (RE) bout (young n = 10, older n = 11) (27 vs. 62 years), (3) long-term 21 weeks endurance exercise (EE) training alone (twice a week, middle-aged, n = 9), or …

Agouti-related peptide-expressing neurons are mandatory for feeding.

2005

Multiple hormones controlling energy homeostasis regulate the expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) and agouti-related peptide (AgRP) in the arcuate nucleus of the hypothalamus. Nevertheless, inactivation of the genes encoding NPY and/or AgRP has no impact on food intake in mice. Here we demonstrate that induced selective ablation of AgRP-expressing neurons in adult mice results in acute reduction of feeding, demonstrating direct evidence for a critical role of these neurons in the regulation of energy homeostasis.

Dynamical Hadrons: Case Studies of Meson-Meson and Meson-Baryon Molecules and Triangle Singularities

2020

In this thesis we use various methods to study the interaction of hadrons. We focus on topics related to exotic hadrons, such as tetraquarks from meson-meson interaction, pentaquarks from meson-baryon, and also triangular singularities. We show how experimental data can be explained with our theoretical models, and make predictions that can be compared with future experiments. In chapter 1 we show our method to describe meson-meson interactions, known as chiral unitary approach, showing how the interaction of pseudoscalars generates the f0(500), f0(980) and a0(980), which appear in the two articles discussed in this chapter: that of the eta_c -> eta pi+ pi- decay, and that of the a0(980)-f0…

Observation of the rare decay K-S -> pi(0)e(+)e(-)

2003

A search for the decay Ks->pi0e+e- has been made by the NA48/1 experiment at the CERN SPS accelerator. Using data collected during 89 days in 2002 with a high-intensity Ks beam, 7 events were found with a background of 0.15 events. The branching fraction BR(Ks->pi0e+e-, m(ee) > 0.165 GeV/c^2) = (3.0^{+1.5}_{-1.2}(stat) +/-0.2 (syst)) x 10^{-9} has been measured. Using a vector matrix element and a form factor equal to one, the measurement gives BR(Ks->pi0e+e-) = (5.8^{+2.9}_{-2.4}) x 10^{-9}.

Observation of the decay KS→π+π−e+e−

2000

Abstract We present the first observation of the decay KS→π+π−e+e− based upon the data collected in 1998 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. We have identified a clean sample of 56 events with negligible background contamination. Using KL→π+π−π0D decays as normalization sample, the branching ratio is measured to be BR(KS→π+π−e+e−)=[4.5±0.7(stat)±0.4(syst)]×10−5. This result is in good agreement with the theoretical expectations from the mechanism of inner bremsstrahlung.

Energy and economic assessment of a small domestic wind turbine in Palermo

2016

The cost effectiveness of micro-wind technology is closely linked to the annual energy production plants, which strongly depends on the wind characteristics and on the morphological properties of the installation site. The power curve of a wind turbine, supplied by manufacturers, characterizes the theoretical energy performance that it should have at a particular site. The behavior of a wind turbine in the field is affected by the speed but also by wind direction variations. At each change of direction and speed, the turbine will try to adapt to new conditions and the phase transition negatively influences the energy production. In order to experimentally confirm what above mentioned, the a…
